I watched a movie called Fantastic Flesh, and it is about make up and special effects in horror movies from the beginning of the genre. It discusses all the classics from the first Frankenstein to Dawn of the Dead to Dusk till Dawn, etc. I took notes on some of their techniques and a lot of them used foam latex and said that was the fastest thing, so I think that is the route I am going to go with. I did some zombie make up on myself and took some pictures to do sketches and get a feel for designing the figure, but I am obviously a larger scale then the models I am going to create. I dont have the expensive equipment like in the movies obviously, but I tried to distort my face in a few of them so I could sketch them, but it was a little difficult.
I know they are goofy but whatever helps you right? I did a couple quick sketches before this but I am working on the final drawings and should have them done before next week and hopefully I can go purchase the materials and begin building my armatures. I have also been looking at this great series of comic books called the dead walking and the illustrations of zombis are incredible. Here are the sketches and one of the illustrations from The Dead Walking.
I have rented and borrowed a lot of zombie movies that are old and new and cheap budgeted and expensive, so I have a wide range and I have begun watching them and plan to watch them as I work. So basically through this project I am dealing with a lot of gore. I started working on the story board as well and fixing up loose ends that I have run into in the past when presenting this idea. So hopefully I can have both the final sketches and story board completed by next week.

GREAT, great exploring! It is obvious that you are committed to your project. Even though I don’t “get” the whole zombie movement I can still respect your choice.
You went above and beyond on this explorer post–great work. Here are my thoughts: what is the overall story? Who are the zombies that we will be seeing and how will they be different to all the other zombie stuff out there? I know you started a story (previous posts)… is this still the plan? You can use yourself as the model (instead of building puppets).
The middle range in your photos looks like it’s getting a bit lost. Open those curves in PhotoShop and open-up the range (but this is WAY nitpicky on my part)
Julie wants you to look at Matthew Barney (she’s peeking over my shoulder right now!) and I definitely agree (especially the freaky exhibition at the Museum of Modern at in New York).
